A wall against racism (2015)

Inclusive urban regeneration/integration of migrants

Picture by Inward - Italian Observatory on Urban Creativity

Participating organizations: UNAR, ANCI, Inward

Action: integration of migrants and low-income citizens in the suburbs of three cities (Naples, Reggio Calabria and Trieste) through their direct involvement in the co-design of housing renewal interventions by means of street art. Three huge facades were painted by world famous street artists using images that represent the welcoming and multiethnic nature of the city.
Street artists, local communities, schools and neighborhood associations participated in the design and implementation phase, from the choice of themes and symbols to be used in the artwork, to the public inauguration.

Challenge: to overcome the diffidence of local communities towards a public intervention based on street art in those neighborhoods were even the basic public services are absent.
To create value and to return dignity and well-being to local citizens by means of art and beauty.

Inclusive social impact engendered: enhancement of the sense of social cohesion, lower threshold of interethnic intolerance and diffidence, improvement of the perceived well-being among local inhabitants, higher sense of belonging and perceived beauty of the urban environment.

Methodology: inclusive co-design.
